Being a Tourist, Deorali Monastery

There are two new guests at Shurep’s now, an elderly American woman from Providence and an even more elderly Indian woman from Delhi. At 72 it is impressive that they are doing a homestay, and even more impressive that tomorrow they will be heading to Dzongu — a sort of reserve area for the indigenous Lepchas and the most undeveloped part of Sikkim. Today Shurep offered to show them around town, to Deorali monastery and the Tibetology Institute. I’d been meaning to get up there myself, so I tagged along. Here are some shots from the monastery. I’m especially freaked out by the web of rebar jutting out of two buildings there. I want to climb them.
