Trash is a serious problem in the hills. For ages hill people would just toss their garbage in streams or just roll it down the hill, and it would become someone else’s issue to deal with. But with the rise of plastics, this is becoming more problematic. There are plenty of government programs trying to deal with the trash and make certain areas “plastic free,” but they need better infrastructure to collect, transport and dispose of waste. Even then it is really the habits of the people that need to change; at the moment it isn’t uncommon to see people finish with a drink or chips packet and just let it fall from their hands.
I wrote some more detailed reflections about this on my last visit two years ago. You can read them here: http://hollow-bones.blogspot.com/2007/09/trash.html.
Here are some pictures to illustration the problem.
