You find funny things in the back rooms of monasteries. I was poking around Rumtek Monastery not long ago, and pushed open some opaque-dusted windows to see this. Not sure exactly what these masks were being prepared for, but they represent some of the many demon-spirits of Tibetan Buddhism. These spirits are wrathful, but not always malevolent. If dealt with properly they can help guide you through the afterlife.
Yesterday I had lunch with some local American film makers at a Mexican restaurant in MG Marg (possibly Sikkim’s only Mexican restaurant?). The decor had a few bits of Mexicana, but the biggest pieces were large, white, plaster Chinese dragons winding around pillars and several gigantic iron versions of these masks.
